Making the known Unknown

The Unknown Classics Project:
Original Adaptations and The Unknown Classics Rep

Unknown Classics is dedicated to creating new work inspired by long-term exploration of classical material– endeavoring to see the building blocks of theatrical tradition with clarity, a fresh perspective, and a contemporary sensibility.

Original Adaptations

The job of creating an original piece of innovative theater from a piece of classic literature is more than the typical six-week rehearsal process can afford. Therefore, we have designed a three-phase process to develop these new works over the course of months or even years. First, we explore the text in its original form, in a complete rehearsal process endeavoring to “make the words our own”. A second rehearsal process then begins to discover the ensemble's unique interpretation of the text. Finally, some projects continue into a third development cycle and rehearsal process to create an original piece of theater -- perhaps with Unknown Play Project member collaboration -- to be presented as a Main Event in our regular season.

All work from the first two phases of each project will result in public performances, too. So, keep an eye on the Current Projects page and watch as projects grow into something completely Unknown!

The Unknown Classics Rep

A thrilling by-product of the process described above is an ever-growing repertoire of classical works developed with care and seasoned through months or years of exploration and performance -- to be presented free or affordably to the public on a regular basis. Straightforward interpretations of classical plays in this repertoire are presented indefinitely in a rotating schedule, continually augmented by the inclusion of new projects.

Keep an eye on the Current Projects page and watch the repertoire grow!
